FAQs

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an evidence-based modality that involves the placement of ultra-fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body to support physiologic balance and healing.

Modern research shows acupuncture helps:

  • Regulate the nervous system

  • Increase circulation

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Stimulate the body’s natural pain-relieving mechanisms

  • Support hormonal and digestive function

Patients in Charlottesville commonly seek acupuncture for pain relief, stress management, hormonal balance, digestive health, sleep concerns, and preventative wellness care.

Is it safe?

Yes. When performed by a licensed practitioner, acupuncture is very safe.

Serious side effects are rare. Some people may experience mild side effects such as slight soreness at a needle site or mild bruising or bleeding.

At our clinic:

  • Only sterile, single-use, FDA-regulated needles are used

  • Strict clean needle technique protocols are followed

  • Treatments are customized to your health history and medical conditions

If you are pregnant, taking blood thinners, or under physician care for a medical condition, your treatment will be adjusted to ensure safety.

How many sessions are needed?

The number of treatments depends on the condition being addressed, its duration, and your overall health. Our goal is to help you feel better after every visit.

  • Acute concerns may respond within 2-6 treatments.

  • Chronic conditions often require 8–12 sessions or more.

  • Preventative or wellness care is commonly scheduled monthly.

Acupuncture works cumulatively. Consistency allows the body to regulate more effectively and sustain improvement over time.

During your first visit, we will discuss a personalized treatment plan with clear recommendations for frequency and expected progress.

Do you offer herbal therapy?

Yes. We provide personalized herbal treatment plans tailored to your individual needs. When appropriate, herbal therapy can be safely integrated into your existing medical care plan.

What does acupuncture feel like?

Most of the time you won't notice the needles, sometimes there is a mild sensation at needle insertion which quickly dissipates. After the needles are inserted, you rest comfortably for 25-30 minutes. While resting you may experience sensations such as tingling or heaviness.
